Meet Your Children's Librarian!

Introducing Jessica Kiefer, Greensburg Hempfield Area Library

By Jen Brozak--Publisher, Macaroni Kid North Huntingdon June 6, 2019

This week, I'm introducing you to Jessica Kiefer, Children's Librarian at the Greensburg Hempfield Area Library. Jessica has been with the library as both a reference librarian and a children's librarian for a little over three years. Read on to learn more about Jessica!

Why did you decide to become a librarian?
Reading was my first love, and once I started reading, I didn’t stop. My mom was a reading specialist and always joked that I was the only kid she ever told to stop reading. My first job was working as a Girl Scout summer camp counselor, and I always loved working with kids. When I was in college, I realized that I loved working in libraries and working with kids, so after finishing my bachelor’s degree, I earned by master’s degree in Library and Information Sciences.

Tell us a little about your background.
I earned my undergraduate degree from Bryn Mawr College. My childhood dream was to be an archaeologist, so I earned a degree in Anthropology. However, right after undergrad, I went to the University of Pittsburgh, where I originally focused on becoming a school librarian. Unfortunately, many districts are cutting librarian positions, so I actually worked with children and adults with disabilities for several years before joining the staff at the Greensburg Hempfield Area Library.

What is your favorite part of your job?
Reading stories to children is lots of fun. I also really enjoy giving children the opportunity to be creative; lots of my programs involve crafts! Watching children discover new interests and favorite books is really amazing.

What are a few of your all-time favorite children's stories?
Charlotte’s Web was the first “chapter book” I read on my own, and it will always be a favorite. I also love Where the Wild Things Are and Holes

What new(er) children's books are you most excited about?
There are so many great new books! I especially love how many really well written Young Adult books and graphic novels are available now. I am always really excited about anything Rick Riordan writes. Kate DiCamillo’s recent book Louisiana’s Way Home was lovely.

What would people be surprised to know about you?
I have been researching my own genealogy since I was 15, and often help library patrons with their family history.  I achieved a life-long dream by making it to Jeopardy! as a contestant a few years ago.

What would people be surprised to learn about the library in general?
Too many people think libraries are outdated and obsolete, which is a shame because they are missing the many incredible things we offer. Libraries are for everyone, and we try to be a place where everyone can find something that interests them. For parents, libraries are an unbelievable resource. Reading to your child is one of the best things you can do for your child. However, we have much more than just books. We have story times, STEM programs, and an unbelievable amount of summer programs. In addition, we have a play space with many fun building toys and puppets.

What are a few upcoming events you'd like to share with our readers?

We are really excited about all of our summer programing! The kickoff for Summer Quest will be held at St. Clair Park in Greensburg with entertainment and fun on Thursday, June 13 from 10 to 11 a.m. All are welcome, and no registration is needed to attend this event!  Be sure to check the Events Calendar on our library’s website, www.ghal.org, to see all the fantastic programs for children and adults that we offer.
