☕Your Guide to Coffee Shops in North Huntingdon, Latrobe & Greensburg

By Mandie Cohen, Macaroni KID Pittsburgh East January 20, 2025

Attention coffee lovers!! If you're anything like me, coffee is a staple to getting your day started. It's what I refer to my kids as "mommy's go-go juice" because it helps energize me to get through the day. Being a boy mom (really just a parent in general) requires LOTS of energy. One of my favorite things to do is check out local coffee shops and try out their special coffees. Personally, I am a big fan of lattes, mochas and the occasional chai tea.

Types of coffee and how they are typically made:

Mochas:
Ingredients: Espresso, chocolate syrup, steamed milk, whipped cream (optional)
  • How it’s made:
    • A shot of espresso is combined with chocolate syrup or powder.
    • Steamed milk is poured over the mixture.
    • Topped with whipped cream for an indulgent finish.
    • Often garnished with a sprinkle of cocoa powder or chocolate shavings.

Lattes:
Ingredients: Espresso, steamed milk, a small amount of milk foam
  • How it’s made:
    • A shot (or more) of espresso is poured into a cup.
    • Steamed milk is added, making up the bulk of the drink.
    • A thin layer of microfoam (frothy milk) tops the latte.
    • Variations include flavored syrups (vanilla, caramel, hazelnut) for a personalized touch.

Cappuccinos:
Ingredients: Espresso, steamed milk, milk foam
  • How it’s made:
    • Made with equal parts of espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam.
    • The foam layer is thicker than in a latte.
    • Often dusted with cocoa powder or cinnamon for extra flavor.

Americanos:
Ingredients: Espresso, hot water
  • How it’s made:
    • A shot (or double shot) of espresso is diluted with hot water.
    • Typically has a similar strength to drip coffee but with a smoother, espresso-based flavor.
    • Customizable by adjusting the water-to-espresso ratio.

Macchiatos:
Ingredients: Espresso, milk foam
  • How it’s made:
    • A shot of espresso is “marked” with a dollop of milk foam.
    • Variants like caramel macchiatos add steamed milk and caramel drizzle.
