Westmoreland County is really lucky to have so many great parks and playgrounds for kids. My kids have swung, spun, and climbed through many of them ... and definitely have their favorites! With the flowers beginning to sprout, the sun shining a little more brightly, and warmer weather beginning to tease us, it's time to get back outside again!
In no particular order, here is a list of five of our family’s many favorite playgrounds in our area and the reasons we love them:
Murrysville Community Park Playground and Splash Pad
4056 Wiestertown Road
Export, Pa 15632
This playground recently opened in June of 2019, and features a Splash Pad area that is open daily during the warmer months, and has bathrooms and water fountains available (including a changing room).
Parent highlight: This park offers lots of room for the kids to play, but also great visibility for parents keeping an eye on the kids as they run wild.
Kid highlight: The kids loved zooming across the zip line and splashing in the water area.
South Greensburg Municipal Park Playground
Intersection of Oak Street and Sheridan Ave
Greensburg, Pa 15601
This playground opened in April of 2019, is located next to South Greensburg Community Park, and is all-inclusive, featuring many wheel-chair accessible activities.
Parent highlight: There is so much to do! The variety of equipment and activities keeps the kids entertained for an extra long time.
Kid highlight: Riding the Gravity Rail, and the “comfy” merry-go-round.
2001 Municipal Court
Harrison City, Pa 15636
This playground at the Penn Township Municipal Park offers fun and colorful equipment for both younger and older children. Portable toilets being available for use are a positive. There are also very nice walking/biking trails (1/2 mile and 1 mile loops) nearby.
Parent highlight: The equipment is modern and safe.
Kid highlight: The climbing rope web.
Irwin Borough Park Playground
424 Main St.
Irwin, Pa 15642
This playground was just installed in the beginning of 2019, has bathrooms and water fountains available nearby, and offers different sections of play geared toward both younger and older children. There is also a stream nearby, perfect for water play and nature exploration!
Parent highlight: There are lots of swings, so everyone gets plenty of turns!
Kid highlight: Practicing ninja skills on the various climbing obstacles and riding down the fast slides.
The Boundless Playground at Twin Lakes Park
1087 Georges Station Rd.
Greensburg, Pa 15601
This playground features a variety of slides, climbing obstacles, and seats that bounce, swivel, and swing. It also features many activity stations that meet or exceed ADA requirements. There are bathrooms and water fountains nearby.
Parent highlight: The safe, cushiony surface that surrounds the playground.
Kid highlight: The Neos Inclusive Electronic Playground area which features games that combine the fun of electronics with the benefits of exercise and movement.
