Meet Your Children's Librarian!

Introducting Diane Resnick, Delmont Public Library

By Jen Brozak--Publisher, Macaroni Kid North Huntingdon January 31, 2019

Next up in our “Meet Your Children’s Librarian” series is Diane Resnick, the Children’s Services Coordinator at the Delmont Public Library! Diane has worked at the library for nearly 3 years, but has been a patron for much longer! Read on to learn more about Diane--including her connection to Mister Rogers' Neighborhood!

How long have you been at the Delmont Library?
I have been at the Delmont Library for almost 3 years as the Children’s Services Coordinator. But I have been coming to the Delmont Library for 10 years as a patron.  I brought my young daughter when she was one and a half!  When the library needed help with the Summer Reading program, I was hired because I had been coming to the programs for so long that I had a good feeling for how things work.

Why did you decide to work at the library?
Deciding to join the Delmont Library team was a no-brainer.  In fact, I said yes right away and our director said, “Do you want to take some time and talk to your husband?”  I have just always loved the community here at Delmont.  It is so welcoming to walk in and be greeted in a friendly way.  That is my favorite part about working here--the people. I love that I know a lot of the people that walk in the door and that they know me.

Tell us a little about your background.
I am a graduate of Greensburg Salem High School.  I have a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Communications from Westminster College.  I worked in Pittsburgh for 10 years in film & television production.  Then I stayed home to raise my daughter and I went back to work part-time as a teaching assistant with an after-school science program before coming to work at the library.

What is your favorite part of your job?
Community, community, community!  I love the people and I especially love the kids.  I love when a child comes in and I can have a conversation with them. I enjoy helping them find the perfect item or showing them a new toy. (TIP:  If I’m working, ask to see something new from the back room.  Our space is so little, I always have items to share in storage.)  I love our children’s programs, especially the ones where I know the kids will understand more than I do.  It’s always fun for me to say, “You know more about this than me. What can you teach me?” or we learn something together. And I like the messy programs!

What are a few of your all-time favorite children's stories?
Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day--I used to check this out every time I went to the Greensburg Library.  Franklin the Turtle series, Berenstain Bears and Lynley Dodd books are favorites of mine.  Harry Potter, Riding Freedom, Ann of Green Gables, Magic Tree house are all chapter book favorites.

What new(er) children's books are you most excited about?
We have a great new collection of Flashlight books.  I like that they add a new element to picture books.  And our backpack collection has been here awhile, but it is always changing and is a great way to explore one subject in depth more.

What would people be surprised to know about you?
People would be surprised to know that I used to work for Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and had a wonderful opportunity to work on a documentary at the White House.  And once I jumped out of an airplane!

What would people be surprised to learn about the library in general?
This space used to be the gym & cafeteria for the local school.  There is a secret spot in the floor and if you jump on it, it sounds hollow.  We don’t know why for sure.  We are in the process of raising funds to build a new library.  Also, we have two librarians named Diane that work here!
