Roadside Attractions

Bedford

July 21, 2016
Roadside attractions have been around for a long time. Business owners would erect HUGE buildings to attract travelers to stop and visit their establishments- gas stations, restaurants, motels. We have many of these around our local area (the Muffler Man & Giant Packard Car Sculpture in Greensburg and the Big Mac Museum in North Huntingdon)  so while our family was camping in Bedford, Pa we decided to take a drive to see if we could find any in that area. We came across a giant coffee pot, ice cream sundae and a quarter.

Heading down Business Rte 30 we saw The Coffee Pot at the entrance of the Bedford County Fairgrounds. It started out as a restaurant beside a gas station. At one point it was a bar/ hotel and most recently the fairgrounds used it as a souvenir shop. It is no longer open to tourists to go inside- souvenirs can be purchased at the fairground office.

In nearby Everett, Pa you will find the Ice Cream Shaped Building, called The Igloo. As we were driving the kids said they hoped it had ice cream; they were ready for a snack! Thankfully they did have soft-serve. The servings were pretty big too. We all enjoyed our treats while sitting under the trees. Then we were off!!

We found the Giant Quarter down the road a bit... keep a lookout for the Down River Golf Course. The Giant Quarter is at the entrance. At first we missed it and had to turn back. It was built as part of the Roadside Giants of the Lincoln Highway. The placard placed at the quarter states it was designed and built by the students of the Bedford County Technical Center.

So keep an eye out for these marvels along the road on your car trips. You never know what you may find.
